Enrolment update campaign - FAQ
What is an enrolment update campaign?
Every year thousands of New Zealanders change their address or occupation, get married or return from overseas and forget to update their enrolment details. The enrolment update campaign aims to identify these changes and to update the rolls to make sure that the electoral rolls used on election day are as up to date as possible.
What do I do when there's an enrolment update campaign?
- Check that the details on the enrolment update form sent to you are correct
- Change any of your details that need correcting on the back of the form
- Sign and date the form
- Return it in the reply envelope provided.
- If all the details on the enrolment update form are correct, do nothing. You are correctly enrolled to vote.
The details on the form are incorrect. What should I do about it?
Print your correct details in the spaces provided on the back of the form, sign and date the form and return it in the reply envelope provided. If your details change in the future, please complete a new enrolment form so that your registrar of electors can keep your records up to date.
What do I do if all the details on my form are correct?
Do nothing. Your details will remain on the electoral roll as they are on the form.
What will happen if I don't return my enrolment update form?
If you don't return your form, you will remain on the roll with the same details as shown on the enrolment update form.
I've received two enrolment update forms, one in my married name and one in my previous name. What should I do?
- Print "NOW MARRIED" on the incorrect form (the one with your previous name) and include your married name and address
- Sign and date the correct form (the one with your married name)
- Send both forms to your registrar of electors in the reply envelope that is provided.
If I send back a corrected form, how will I know if the corrections have been made?
You will be sent a letter confirming your address or name changes have been made and showing the details that have been recorded on the roll. If you change your title or occupation you will not be sent a letter. You can also check for yourself online.
I've received a form(s) for people who no longer live at this address.
If you know where the people live, please forward the forms on to them. If you don't know their address, write "GONE NO ADDRESS" on the front of the envelope and post the envelope as soon as possible.
What do I do if my enrolment update form doesn't arrive?
You must fill in and return an enrolment form called 'Enrolling to vote: Application'. These are available free from any PostShop, or by calling toll-free on 0800 ENROL NOW (0800 36 76 56). Alternatively, you can enrol online. After your form has been processed you will be sent a letter confirming your enrolment.
I've received a form for family/friends who are living overseas. What should I do?
If you are a registered elector and the form needs amending, you can do so, sign it and return it to us. You must print on their form next to your signature 'Elector overseas - signed by their direction'. You may also amend the form of friends or family living overseas if you hold a Power of Attorney from them. You must print on the form next to your signature 'Elector Overseas - Power of Attorney'.
I have a disability and need help to make changes to my enrolment update form. What should I do?
You can have your form amended by a registered elector. They must print on your form next to their signature 'Elector Physically Disabled - signed by their direction'. Or, you can have the form amended and signed by a person who holds a Power of Attorney from you. They must print on the form next to their signature "Elector Physically Disabled - Power of Attorney'.
I have received my enrolment update form but other members of my household have not received theirs. What's going on?
If someone does not receive their enrolment update form it is possible that they are not enrolled, or have not kept their details up-to-date on the Electoral Roll. They will need to fill in and return an enrolment form called 'Enrolling to vote: Application', or they can enrol online. Click Do it here! to check or update your details.
I have filled in a change of address form but my details haven't been updated. Why?
One of the reasons for the enrolment update campaign is to pick up issues like this. Please fill in the form with your correct details and return it in the reply envelope provided.
You have not recorded me as a New Zealand Māori. Why?
When you enrolled you were asked whether you were a New Zealand Māori or of New Zealand Māori descent. You either answered "No" or did not answer the question. Please fill in your re-enrolment form to advise us that you are a New Zealand Māori or a descendent of a New Zealand Māori and return it in the reply envelope provided.
